What shape and size should my stainless steel manhole cover be?
The actual size of a manhole (also known as a manhole cover) varies depending on its intended use, location and local regulations. However, there are some general guidelines that should be considered when determining the dimensions of a manhole:
Minimum size for access: A manhole should be large enough to allow a person to safely enter and move around in the shaft. A frequently used minimum size for access is around 800 x 800 millimetres or a diameter of 800 millimetres.
Purpose: The size of the manhole also depends on its intended use. A manhole for access to sewage systems may be smaller than one for inspection or maintenance purposes.
Safety: The manhole should be large enough to allow for quick evacuation or rescue in an emergency. It should provide sufficient space to rescue an injured person.
Equipment: The size of the manhole access may also depend on the equipment required for inspection or maintenance work in the manhole.
Regulations: Always ensure that you comply with local regulations and standards regarding the size of manholes.
Access options: Consider how the manhole will be accessed. There should be enough space to use a ladder or safety equipment for safe entry.
Future requirements: Think long-term when making your investment. Are there future requirements and expansions to your project. A slightly larger manhole could be useful if future maintenance or upgrades need to be carried out.
Differences in format and appearance
In addition to the size, the shape and appearance of a manhole cover also vary. These can be customised to suit the intended use and your requirements. There are both square and round standard versions from 800 x 800 millimetres or with a diameter from 800 mm. Rectangular or square manhole covers are widely used and fit well in most urban environments. They are often available from stock in standard sizes up to 1000 x 1000 millimetres and provide a robust cover for manholes. Round manhole covers are often found in areas where round manholes or entrances are present. They are particularly suitable for closing circular openings.
Special designs and sizes that deviate from the standard are available on request. You can also choose between two millimetre and four millimetre thick stainless steel sheet. Depending on the model, tear plate can also be used.
Both round and rectangular manhole covers can be fitted with a DN 150 vapour hood welded into the centre. The vapour hood guarantees optimum ventilation in the manhole. It can be fitted with additional filters. A high-quality biofilter can be used to prevent unpleasant odours. Pollen filters or air vents also make sense, depending on your hygiene situation. It is best to combine your shaft equipment with an additional ventilation chimney and professional insulation in order to optimise the effect of the vapour hood.
Shaft covers are usually flush with the ground. However, a protruding variant is not an option for every position of the manhole. There are areas of application for manhole covers where flush installation is advantageous or even absolutely necessary. Recessed manhole covers can be walked on without any problems, for example in pedestrian areas or highly frequented work areas. A non-slip surface made of tear plate is usually required.
Drive-on versions are also available, for example for vehicle traffic, optionally in classes A15, B125 or D400. These manhole covers can withstand loads of up to 400 kN and can be installed at ground level. A distinction is made between models for use in stationary or moving traffic; in case of doubt, the higher-quality model is recommended for moving traffic.
